Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first roles on television were two appearances on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in The ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. The actress did not go on to explore acting as a profession after reaching the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental impact stress might have. Perry stated that she was nervous to be an actor in high school but began performing in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness led Perry home to California which was where theatre jobs were readily available. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was staged in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, she was a part-time character in ABC's political thriller Scandal which starred her father. The same year she was cast as a young character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's role. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she received the role via an audition.
